Spring enrollment up at Montana Western

UMW News Bureau

Spring 2010 enrollment numbers are in at the University of Montana Western. The 15th-day count reflects a continuing upward trend on top of the record-breaking fall 2009 enrollment numbers. By Ashley Makowski Spring 2010 enrollment numbers are in at the University of Montana Western. The 15th-day count reflects a continuing upward trend on top of the record-breaking fall 2009 enrollment numbers. Montana Western saw increased enrollment in most student categories for the 2010 spring semester, particularly in the new freshmen headcount, which shows an approximate 270 percent percent increase from last spring at 52. “We are particularly happy with our new first-year student and transfer numbers,” Chancellor Richard Storey said. “Through increased admissions recruitment and marketing efforts and, most importantly, word of mouth, more and more first-time college students are finding their way to Montana Western and all we have to offer here. These numbers also continue to demonstrate the impact our unique Experience One program is having in our students’ lives. Montana Western is the only public four-year university in the nation to offer a block scheduling program, Experience One, in which students take one class at a time. Total freshmen numbers increased from 279 in spring 2009 to 338 freshmen this spring, nearly a 22 percent difference. Montana Western continues to see a large boost in new transfer students, rising from 46 last spring to 80 this spring — a 74 percent increase. The current full-time equivalent (FTE) at Montana Western is 1,177, up from 1,038 last spring — an approximate 17 percent increase. The current headcount is 1,259 students compared to Spring 2009’s 1,110. The FTE and headcount numbers for paid-only students are 1,244 and 1,171, respectively. Enrollment estimates are based on the 15th day count, which allows for student registration to be finalized and gives the university a clearer picture of whether or not students have cancelled, paid and are attending class. Montana Western Registrar Jason Karch said his office will present the finalized census enrollment numbers to the Commissioner of Higher Education within the next several days.
