National Day of Service at the University of Montana Western

UMW News Bureau

Campus Corps team members gather recyclables at a Dillon neighborhoodThe University of Montana Western marked the 9/11 eighth anniversary and National Day of Service and Remembrance with a campus-wide call to service on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009.

History, Philosophy and Social Sciences Professor Dr. Sean Eudaily kicked off events with a keynote speech outside the UMW Student Union Building at noon. Eudaily spoke of the 9/11 terror attacks and the importance of honoring the victims of that day, but he concluded his speech by encouraging citizens to turn their patriotism and pride into community action.

"Let's not just be proud of our country," Eudaily encouraged the crowd. "Let's make our country proud by giving back."

The Montana Western Campus Corps organized a Dillon recycling pickup as part of the day's events. Over 30 student volunteers collected recycling in Dillon's neighborhoods and took it to the city's recycling bins in an effort to raise awareness of Dillon's recycling opportunities.

Also on campus, the University of Montana Western School of Outreach presented a 7 p.m. showing of "Taking Chance" in the Great Room of the Swysgood Technology Center. Kevin Bacon stars in the film as Lt. Colonel Mike Strobl, a veteran Marine officer who volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps to his hometown in Wyoming. "Taking Chance" was filmed in and around Ennis, Mont. and was presented free in commemoration of Patriot’s Day. Swede Troedsson organized the event and reported over 40 people in attendance.

"It relates the sensitive and respectful care rendered to each member of the military killed in the performance of their duty," Troedsson said of the film.
